It's that time of the year again! When the sun will set at 5pm AND no matter how much you layer up, the cold seeps in from somewhere.

Depending on who you ask, Winter is either the best or the worst time for a lot of people. Some say their energy drops during the day, while others describe the cold wakes them up.

Some of us call it seasonal slump. Others know it clinically as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

But either way, when sunlight disappears, so can your motivation. And in a culture where hustle is "glorified" and rest isn't always normalized, it can be easy to suffer silently.

HOWEVER!

There are a FEW things you can follow that can help you beat the cold this Solstice Season.

SAVING YOUR DAYLIGHTS

  • We all know Vitamin D matters, but so does dopamine. So get some 15 mins of daylight everyday. (even if it's cloudy)

  • To enhance, create a playlist of the tracks that feel like sun on your skin

KEEP IT MOVIN'

  • Not everyone needs a gym. But you need to shake the SAD off.

  • Movement is one of the most effective ways to combat SAD and brain fog.

  • The least you can do is nod to the rhythm of your favorite Bollywood songs. Plus that's more fun than snuggling in the comforter.

  • Go for a walk, use that gym membership (finally). Just keep it movin'.

ROUTINE CHECK

  • Ever heard of the term "Circadian Rhythm"? Well if your answer's NO, it's basically your sleep, hunger and mood clock.

  • And for many of us juggling multiple time zones, jobs or family roles, it can get super chaotic.

  • Here's what you can do:

    • Wake up and sleep at similar times.

    • As a bookend to the day, end with rituals. Have a cup of chai and play some soothing Bollywood songs.

    • Start journaling a page.

    • If you feel like you need more rest, don't feel guilty. Remember the Circadian Rhythm.

    • Structure is care, and your body feels that.

CRAVE IT DOWN

  • Now now, we know when the cold hits, the cravings hit harder especially for fried snacks, carbs and sugar. Totally normal.

  • But let's look differently here, think about how can food nourish, not numb?

CONNECT THE DOTS

  • Instead of feeling the Winter Blues in solitary, call that friend, join those online watch parties, and DEFINITELY get on Discord.

  • Distance doesn't stop you anymore. It's a World Wide Web.

IN THE END...

The cold will come, the days that feel like nights will too. But that doesn't mean you have to dim. This Solstice, go easy on yourself. Move when you can. Feel the Warmth and Nourishment. Text your friends. And let the music play.

Because even in winter, BHQ stays lit.
