Unnao to Mumbai: Vishal Mishra's Early Life

Vishal Mishra was born on December 8, 1991, in Unnao, a small city in Uttar Pradesh. His father, a lawyer, had mapped out a more conventional path for him, so music was never supposed to be his career, but it happened.
At just three years old, Vishal gave his first stage performance, singing a song from the 1992 Bollywood film Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman.
By the time he was ten, his sister gifted him his first musical instrument, an electric guitar, and that gift changed everything.
He went on to complete his schooling in Lucknow and eventually graduated with a law degree, even practicing law for a period in Bhubaneswar. But music kept pulling him back.
A friend suggested him to audition for a reality show called Tukbaazi in Lucknow. Vishal auditioned and won the show. That win gave him the confidence to pack his bags and head to Mumbai, against his father's wishes.
The Reality Show That Launched Everything

In 2012, Vishal Mishra appeared on Bharat Ki Shaan: Singing Star on DD National — a reality singing competition. The judge that day was Lalit Pandit, one half of the legendary Jatin-Lalit composing duo.
Lalit Pandit was so impressed by Vishal's voice that he personally mentored him in the early days of his career. Vishal eventually moved to Mumbai and began assisting Lalit Pandit — learning the inner workings of the Bollywood music industry from one of its finest.
Fun fact: Vishal had also auditioned for Indian Idol earlier in his life, and was rejected. That rejection didn't stop him. It pushed him forward.

Vishal Mishra's Musical Debut: 2016

Vishal Mishra made his debut as a singer in 2016 with the song Shaam-O-Seher from the Bollywood film Shorgul.
The same year, he made his debut as a music composer with the film Tutak Tutak Tutiya, contributing the songs Chalte Chalte and Ranga De.
He also composed music for the Tamil film Devi in 2016, marking an early sign of the cross-industry range he would continue to demonstrate.
A major early milestone came in 2017, when he composed Jaane De, sung by the iconic Atif Aslam for the film Qarib Qarib Singlle. That song began to put his name on music lovers' radar.
The Breakthrough: Kaise Hua from Kabir Singh (2019)

If there is one song that defines the turning point of Vishal Mishra's career, it is "Kaise Hua" from the 2019 blockbuster Kabir Singh, starring Shahid Kapoor and Kiara Advani and became one of the most-streamed Bollywood songs of that year.
The Kabir Singh soundtrack became a cultural phenomenon
Vishal Mishra won the Filmfare Award for Best Music Director in 2020 for the film
He also won the Zee Cine Award for Best Music Director and the Mirchi Music Award for Best Music (Listener's Choice)
Kaise Hua on Spotify alone has crossed 550 million+ streams
The Kabir Singh era solidified Vishal Mishra's identity: the composer and singer who could make you feel love and loss in under four minutes.
Naacho Naacho: RRR (2022)

In 2022, Vishal Mishra contributed to a historic moment in Indian cinema with his involvement in SS Rajamouli's RRR. He sang the Hindi version of the song Naatu Naatu, titled Naacho Naacho, alongside Rahul Sipligunj.
In 2023, Naatu Naatu won the Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 95th Oscars, marking a significant achievement for Indian cinema and a notable highlight in Vishal's career.
Pehle Bhi Main: Animal (2023)

In late 2023, Sandeep Reddy Vanga's Animal, a polarizing yet highly successful Ranbir Kapoor film, featured the song Pehle Bhi Main, composed and sung by Vishal Mishra.
In 2024, Vishal Mishra won the Filmfare Award for Best Music for the Animal album, his second major Filmfare recognition in just a few years.
The Rajinikanth Chapter: Jailer (2023)

In 2023, Vishal Mishra achieved a rare milestone for Bollywood composers by becoming the singing voice of Rajinikanth in the Tamil blockbuster Jailer. He recorded the Hindi versions of the tracks Rathamaarey and The Feel of Jailer.
For an artist from Unnao, UP, lending his voice to a Rajinikanth film was a big deal.
Tum Ho Toh: Saiyaara (2025) — The Latest Chapter

In 2025, Vishal Mishra is part of one of Bollywood's most anticipated musical events: Saiyaara, directed by Mohit Suri and produced by Yash Raj Films. His track Tum Ho Toh has received significant praise, with Suri calling it one of Vishal's "best romantic songs yet." The two have known each other for over 12 years, with Suri's music initially inspiring Vishal's musical journey. Tum Ho Toh has over 211 million Spotify streams, making it Vishal's second most-streamed song after Kaise Hua.
